ORGANIC SAGE SEEDS |
General: Sage, which is also known as Common Sage or Garden Sage, is a member of the mint family. Sage originates from the Mediterranean and Southern Europe and is now cultivated in many organic gardens worldwide. It is a subshrub, a type of perennial that develops woody stems and twigs that can be very long-lived. The Romans considered Sage a sacred herb and they held elaborate ceremonies during harvesting time. The name Sage is derived from the Latin ‘salveo’, which means to heal, an appropriate name for this plant which is so highly regarded for its healing properties. Description: Sage grows to a height of about 60 to 90 centimeters (40 to 100 inches) and has a tendency to spread out. It has oblong, wooly, gray-green leaves that are lighter underneath and darker on top. Purple, blue flowers emerge at mid-summer. Harvesting: Garden Sage grows best in warm and dry areas, but it grows well almost anywhere in ordinary garden soil; it thrives when shaded from sunshine to some extent. Sage should be harvested before flowering occurs. To grow Sage in your organic vegetable garden you can start the plant off from organic herb seeds and the seedlings to the garden once they are big enough. Uses: Sage is a very diverse herb and has culinary, medicinal and even cosmetic benefits. Sage is used either fresh or when it is dry. Medicinal Uses: The oils and tannins in Sage have astringent, antiseptic, and irritant properties. Sage is used as a gargle, in tea form, for mouth sores and ulcers, sore gums and sore throats. |
